Sean Scully, “A Bedroom in Venice” (1988)
JMW Turner, “Turner’s Bedroom in the Palazzo Giustiniani” (1840)
I wonder if Scully was influenced at all by the Turner Venice bedroom, or if they had any similar experiences that led to each of these paintings. Does the taller block of stripes on the left suggest the window on the far left of Turner’s bedroom? Do the red stripes represent the bed? There’s a slight echo of color with the turquoise and the red, but Scully’s trademark stripes dominate his abstraction, differently evocative than Turner’s soft watercolors.
